Minutes 1-5: Warm-up and technique

Begin with physical and mental warming up. Spend the first five minutes on scales, arpeggios, or specific technical exercises assigned by your teacher. This focuses the mind and prepares the muscles for more demanding work.

Do not rush this section. Play slowly and intentionally, focusing on tone quality, evenness, and relaxed posture. A mindful warm-up sets the tone for a productive session.

Minutes 6-15: Targeted problem solving

Dedicate the bulk of the session to the most difficult sections of your repertoire. Do not play the piece from the beginning. Instead, isolate the specific measures that are causing trouble.

Use varied practice techniques: practice hands separately, change the rhythm, practice in small chunks, and use a metronome. Goal-oriented repetition of small sections builds muscle memory much faster than mindless play-throughs.

Minutes 16-20: Review and sight-reading

Spend the final minutes reviewing a polished piece to maintain your repertoire and end the session on a positive, musical note. Alternatively, spend this time working on sight-reading skills.

Ending with something enjoyable reinforces a positive association with practice. Before leaving the instrument, briefly review your goals for the next practice session.
