The challenge of extreme low humidity
The high desert climate of Albuquerque and Santa Fe poses significant challenges for acoustic instruments. Extreme low humidity can cause the wood in a piano to shrink and crack, leading to loose tuning pins, cracked soundboards, and rattling action parts.
During the winter months, when indoor heating further dries the air, relative humidity can drop below 15%. Pianos generally prefer a stable humidity level of around 40-50%.
Climate control solutions for your piano
The most effective way to protect a piano in New Mexico is to install a specialized piano climate control system (such as a Dampp-Chaser). These systems are installed inside the piano and automatically regulate humidity levels.
Alternatively, using a high-capacity room humidifier in the room where the piano is kept can help, provided it is monitored and refilled consistently. Never place a humidifier directly under or inside the piano yourself.
Strategic placement in the home
Where you place the piano is critical. Keep it away from exterior doors, drafty windows, direct sunlight, and fireplaces. Most importantly, ensure the piano is not placed directly in the path of a heating or air conditioning vent.
