Preparation begins the night before

A calm morning starts the night before. Ensure your child packs their original scores (with measures numbered, if required), their instrument, necessary accessories (rosin, reeds, rockstops), and a water bottle.

Lay out performance clothing, ensuring it is comfortable, professional, and adheres to any dress codes. Plan your travel route, allowing extra time for traffic, parking, and finding the correct building and warm-up room.

Managing the environment and energy

Arrive at the venue with plenty of time to spare, but avoid arriving so early that the student becomes exhausted waiting. Bring a healthy, non-messy snack and a quiet activity (like a book) to occupy them during downtime.

Protect your child's focus. Some students prefer to review their music quietly, while others need distraction. Follow their lead and avoid projecting your own nervousness onto them. Keep conversations positive and encouraging.

Navigating the performance and aftermath

During the performance, be a supportive audience member. Turn off your phone and do not attempt to record unless explicitly permitted by the competition rules. Applaud warmly, regardless of how the performance went.

Afterward, focus your feedback on their effort and courage rather than the result. Whether they win or lose, celebrate the hard work they put into preparing. A post-competition tradition, like getting ice cream, can help reinforce a positive association with performing.
