NCTM Portfolio Project Checklist
An overview of the components required to complete the Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) portfolio.
Project I: Teaching philosophy and practice
The first section of the portfolio requires a written statement of your teaching philosophy. This should articulate your core beliefs about music education, how students learn, and the goals you have for your students.
You must also provide evidence of how this philosophy is implemented in your studio, including a description of your studio policies, business practices, and strategies for fostering a positive learning environment.
Project II: Curriculum and lesson planning
This project demonstrates your ability to plan and execute effective instruction. You will submit comprehensive lesson plans for three different students (or classes) at varying levels of advancement.
The lesson plans must include clear objectives, repertoire selection, technical exercises, and methods for assessing student progress. You will also provide a video recording of your teaching, showcasing your ability to communicate concepts clearly and interact effectively with a student.
Project III, IV, and V: Performance, history, and pedagogy
The remaining projects assess your comprehensive musical knowledge. You will demonstrate your own performance proficiency, either through a recorded performance or by providing evidence of significant professional performance experience.
You will also complete written assessments demonstrating your understanding of music history, theory, and the specific pedagogy of your chosen instrument or voice. These projects ensure that certified teachers possess the deep musical understanding necessary to guide students effectively.
