About the MTNA Voice Competition
The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Voice Competition is one of the most prestigious events for aspiring singers. In New Mexico, vocalists begin at the state-level competition hosted by PMTNM. Winners advance to the division level, and ultimately, the national finals.
Competitors are evaluated on vocal technique, musicality, diction, stage presence, and the appropriateness of their repertoire. The competition is divided into several age categories, including Junior (ages 11-14), Senior (ages 15-18), and Young Artist (ages 19-26).
Repertoire Requirements
Selecting the right repertoire is crucial. All selections must be memorized, and competitors must provide their own collaborative pianist. Below are the general guidelines.
Language Requirements
A well-rounded program is required. Depending on the division, singers must present pieces in English and at least one foreign language (Italian, German, French, etc.). Young Artists typically require three distinct languages.
Stylistic Variety
Programs must feature a variety of historical periods and styles. Repertoire typically includes art songs and arias from opera or oratorio. Musical theater and popular music are not permitted.
Time Limits
Each division has a strict maximum performance time. Programs should be carefully timed to ensure they fit within the limit. (e.g., 15 minutes for Junior, 20 for Senior, 30 for Young Artist).
Tips for New Mexico Vocalists
The high altitude and dry climate of New Mexico present unique challenges for vocalists. Proper hydration and vocal pacing are vital. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the competition, and consider using a humidifier at night.
Collaborate closely with your vocal instructor to select repertoire that showcases your strengths without straining your voice. It is highly recommended to perform your competition program in public settings, such as local studio classes or masterclasses, prior to the official state auditions.
Work with a Skilled Collaborative Pianist
The relationship between a singer and their pianist is a true partnership. In New Mexico, you should secure your collaborative pianist early, schedule ample rehearsal time, and treat the performance as a duet rather than a solo with accompaniment.
