The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) competitions are among the most prestigious events for young musicians in the United States. Participating in an MTNA competition provides students with a valuable goal, formal evaluations by expert judges, and an opportunity to perform at a high level. However, understanding the exact eligibility requirements and entry rules is essential before registering. Here is what parents and students need to know.

Teacher Membership Requirements

The most common question parents ask is regarding their teacher's affiliation with MTNA.

• Active Membership: To enter a student into an MTNA competition without paying additional fees, the student's primary teacher must be an active, dues-paying member of MTNA and the state affiliate (such as PMTNM) at the time of registration.
• Non-Member Teachers: If a teacher is not an MTNA member, the student may still compete, but a substantial non-member teacher fee is typically required in addition to the standard student entry fee.
• Primary Instructor Rule: The teacher entering the student must be the primary instructor in the performance medium. A student cannot be entered by a secondary teacher or an accompanist just to avoid the non-member fee.

Understanding Age Brackets

MTNA competitions are divided into distinct age categories to ensure fair evaluation. A critical rule is that a student's age is determined as of January 1 of the competition year (the year the national finals take place), not their age at the time of the state-level audition.

• Junior Performance: Ages 11–14

• Chamber Music: Average age of the ensemble members must be 18–29, with no member younger than 18 or older than 29.
