Preparing for a music competition requires months of dedication and practice. For families and students looking to participate in New Mexico's premier musical events, knowing deadlines and registration windows matters. Dates below are confirmed directly with each organization where noted; for anything not yet announced, verify with the organization before you plan around it — competition dates and deadlines change year to year and are set by each organization, not by PMTNM.

MTNA Performance Competitions (State Level)

The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Performance Competitions provide educational experiences for students and teachers and recognize exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence.

National Registration Deadline: September 9, 2026 at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. No exceptions.
New Mexico State Competition Date: November 7, 2026, at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque by IHG (1901 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102).
Eligibility: Open to students studying with an MTNA member or paying a non-member teacher fee.

PMTNM State Honors Competition

A state-level competition meant to encourage high standards of performance and provide a competitive opportunity for New Mexico students.

Central District Audition Date: September 26, 2026 (time and venue TBA).
Central District Postmark Deadline: September 9, 2026. Late entries are not accepted.
District Entry Fee: $45 for AMTA/PMTNM members, $70 for non-members. District winners pay an additional $35 to compete at state.
State Finals: November 7, 2026, at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque by IHG (1901 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102) — the same date and venue as the MTNA state competition above.

Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition

Sponsored by the Music Guild of New Mexico, this competition offers piano and string students the chance to perform with a professional orchestra.

Application Deadline: December 1, 2026
Competition Dates: February 19-20, 2027

Santa Fe Symphony Concerto Competition
