What is PMTNM?
The Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico (PMTNM) is the official New Mexico state affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) — the oldest professional music teachers organization in America, founded in 1876. PMTNM connects New Mexico families with vetted, professional music teachers across the state.
Is every teacher on this site certified?
All teachers listed are active members of PMTNM and MTNA, which means they have committed to MTNA's professional standards and Code of Ethics. Teachers who additionally hold the NCTM (Nationally Certified Teacher of Music) credential are clearly marked — NCTM certification requires a separate portfolio-based evaluation and represents the highest credential in private music teaching.

How do I contact a teacher?
Each teacher's profile page includes a contact form. Your message goes directly to the teacher. PMTNM does not share your contact information.
What should I expect to pay for lessons?
Lesson rates are set by individual teachers and are not controlled by PMTNM. In New Mexico, private music lesson rates typically range from $40–$90 per hour depending on teacher experience, credentials, and location. NCTM-certified teachers may charge at the higher end of this range.
My child has never taken music lessons. Is this the right place to start?
Yes. Many PMTNM teachers specialize in beginning students, including young children. Use the age filter on the teacher search to find teachers who work with your child's age group. Our

Do PMTNM teachers offer online lessons?
Many do. Use the "lesson location" option on the teacher search to find teachers offering online instruction via Zoom or similar platforms.
What are MTNA Competitions?
The MTNA National Competitions are the most recognized student music competitions in the United States. They begin at the state level — administered by PMTNM in New Mexico — and progress through division and national rounds. Only students whose teachers are active MTNA members can enter.
